DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced strong condemnation on September 17, 2017, demanding an immediate and complete rollback of relentless hikes in petrol and diesel retail prices. Stalin stated that daily upward revisions implemented by state-owned oil marketing companies severely crippled ordinary citizens, daily-wage workers, auto drivers, and small business owners. He pointed out that while global crude oil rates remained historically low, the Union government ruthlessly levied exorbitant central excise duties to extract massive surplus revenues at the expense of common consumers.
Stalin observed that escalating fuel tariffs triggered widespread inflationary pressure across all essential commodities, including vegetables, pulses, and freight transit. Transporters and small manufacturers faced diminishing margins, while lower-middle-class household budgets experienced acute distress. Instead of sharing the economic benefit of cheaper international crude with the public, the central administration allowed oil corporations to amass windfall profits while burdening citizens.
The DMK leader urged the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to immediately slash central excise levies and restore affordable retail fuel prices. He affirmed that the DMK would organize public protests to resist predatory fuel taxation.
