DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a scathing condemnation on September 20, 2017, describing Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal's disqualification of eighteen ruling party legislators as the ultimate murder of constitutional democracy. Stalin stated that the Speaker blatantly abused his quasi-judicial powers under the Tenth Schedule to rescue an illegitimate, minority regime from imminent parliamentary defeat. By arbitrarily disqualifying dissenting MLAs who merely petitioned the Governor expressing lack of confidence in the Chief Minister, the Speaker reduced the legislative office to a partisan instrument.

Stalin observed that constitutional law clearly distinguished between dissenting within an inner-party forum and defying a party whip inside the legislative assembly. The eighteen legislators had not voted against any legislative whip, nor had they resigned their party membership. The unconstitutional disqualification was an act of political desperation executed solely to alter assembly arithmetic ahead of a floor test. This partisan interference severely undermined parliamentary norms and judicial precedents established by the Supreme Court.

The DMK leader demanded immediate judicial intervention to restore constitutional propriety and mandate an immediate floor test. He affirmed that the DMK would fight this authoritarian assault on democratic rights.
