DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced fierce indignation on September 22, 2017, over the ruling AIADMK government's contradictory and anti-farmer conduct in the Supreme Court. Stalin observed that while the state administration acted with extraordinary haste to appeal against a Madras High Court judgment granting comprehensive crop loan waivers to all farmers, it displayed shocking lethargy and unpreparedness in defending Tamil Nadu's vital Cauvery water rights. He termed this duplicitous administrative stance an unpardonable betrayal of the state's suffering agrarian community.
Stalin highlighted that delta farmers faced an unprecedented crisis marked by crop failures, acute agrarian debt, and tragic farmer suicides. Instead of providing comprehensive fiscal relief to all cultivators regardless of landholding ceilings, the state government hired expensive legal counsel to deny them loan waivers. Conversely, during critical Cauvery hearings, the administration failed to present robust evidentiary arguments or insist on the immediate formation of the Cauvery Management Board.
The DMK leader demanded that the state immediately withdraw its anti-farmer appeal against loan waivers and deploy its full legal strength on the Cauvery issue. He affirmed DMK's steadfast support for farmers.
