Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin appealed on September 22, 2017, that the Supreme Court of India must ensure complete justice for Tamil Nadu by guaranteeing its legitimate water allocation as mandated in the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final award. As the apex court conducted final hearings on appeals filed by riparian states, Stalin emphasized that the livelihood of millions of delta farmers hinged entirely on the judicial enforcement of statutory water releases from upstream Karnataka reservoirs.

Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu's agricultural heartland suffered acute distress due to consecutive seasons of deficit rainfall and Karnataka's persistent refusal to comply with distress-sharing formulas. The Cauvery Tribunal's final verdict of February 2007 had carefully determined riparian water shares based on historic agricultural dependency, soil requirements, and established irrigation practices. Any dilution of Tamil Nadu's allocated quantum of 192 thousand million cubic feet would permanently devastate agrarian livelihoods across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam.

The DMK leader urged the Union government to constitute the statutory Cauvery Management Board without bowing to electoral pressures in neighboring states. He reaffirmed DMK's commitment to delta farmers.
