DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the state government's decision on September 25, 2017, to constitute a single-member inquiry commission into the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Stalin characterized the commission of inquiry as an empty political maneuver designed to deflect growing public outrage and delay genuine legal accountability. He recalled that when the DMK earlier demanded a judicial probe, ruling ministers evaded the issue by claiming legal matters were pending before the Madras High Court.
Stalin pointed out that a state-level commission lacked statutory investigative teeth, independent forensic capabilities, and the authority to summon central intelligence files or foreign medical specialists. Appointing a retired judge was merely an administrative mechanism to buy political time while factional leaders settled internal power disputes. The contradictory statements uttered by ruling ministers only proved that political collusion was actively suppressing the real sequence of medical events.
The DMK leader reaffirmed that only an independent probe conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation under High Court monitoring could uncover the truth. He pledged that the DMK would continue pursuing statutory accountability for the citizens of Tamil Nadu.
