DMK working president M.K. Stalin sharply condemned the ruling AIADMK government on October 4, 2017, for coercively transporting rural workers to official functions in Karur district. Stalin revealed that hundreds of underprivileged laborers engaged under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme were compelled to leave their worksites and board government vehicles to fill empty chairs at state-sponsored functions. He noted that after previously exploiting vulnerable school students as ceremonial spectators, the administration now exploited impoverished rural wage earners.
Stalin pointed out that diverting manual workers away from statutory guaranteed employment violated basic welfare guidelines and deprived struggling families of their daily wages. The administration's desperate need to manufacture artificial attendance for ruling faction ministers exposed deep public apathy toward the incumbent regime. Instead of utilizing rural employment allocations to build productive rural ponds, bunds, and roads, district machinery focused on partisan publicity.
The DMK leader demanded immediate action by the Ministry of Rural Development against officials responsible for misusing the federal employment guarantee framework. He reiterated that the DMK would firmly defend the constitutional dignity and labor rights of rural workers.
