DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a poignant statement on October 24, 2017, decrying consecutive tragic self-immolation incidents in Tirunelveli and Sivakasi. Stalin stated that these harrowing occurrences provided undeniable proof that misrule by an incompetent administration had turned Tamil Nadu into an unlivable state for ordinary citizens. He emphasized that when daily wage earners and working families felt compelled to end their lives in front of administrative headquarters, it marked the complete breakdown of public governance.
Stalin observed that while the Tirunelveli family succumbed to unbearable extortion by illegal usurers after police inaction, the Sivakasi incident highlighted acute economic distress among unorganized industrial workers. Instead of providing timely institutional safeguards, grievance redressal mechanisms, and social security protections, the incumbent government remained absorbed in petty factional survival. District collectors and police officers demonstrated shocking apathy toward citizens petitioning for basic protection and livelihood assistance.
The DMK leader urged the state administration to acknowledge governance failures and enact urgent protective measures for distressed families. He affirmed that public welfare must form the cornerstone of democratic governance. Stalin vowed that the DMK would amplify grassroots struggles across Tamil Nadu.
