DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound dismay on October 25, 2017, over the state government's absolute failure to undertake necessary monsoon preparedness across Tamil Nadu. Stalin pointed out that despite suffering catastrophic devastation during the December 2015 Chennai floods and Cyclone Vardah, the incumbent administration failed to draw administrative lessons. Critical stormwater drainage projects, desilting of major water courses, and canal restoration works remained stalled due to pervasive bureaucratic inertia and political apathy.
Stalin observed that key water bodies, including the Adyar, Cooum, and Buckingham Canal, remained severely choked with silt, plastic waste, and unchecked industrial effluents. Consequently, even moderate showers threatened to submerge surrounding residential colonies and disrupt daily urban life. He censured the ruling dispensation for squandering precious dry-weather months on factional political maneuvering instead of executing crucial pre-monsoon flood mitigation infrastructure.
The DMK leader demanded immediate mobilization of emergency disaster machinery, deployment of high-capacity drainage pumps, and clearance of arterial waterways. He asserted that the safety of citizens could not be jeopardized by administrative negligence. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK would hold the government accountable for any flood-induced hardship.
