DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on October 28, 2017, that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would organize massive statewide demonstrations on November 6 outside fair price shops across Tamil Nadu. The planned protests aimed to resist the state government's decision to steeply hike the retail price of subsidized sugar sold through the Public Distribution System. Stalin described the price revision as an unjustifiable burden imposed directly upon lower-income households and daily-wage earners.
Stalin pointed out that the universal public distribution mechanism had historically shielded working-class families from inflationary distress in open markets. By dramatically escalating essential commodity prices under the pretext of implementing the National Food Security Act, the incumbent administration systematically dismantled foundational welfare safeguards. The sudden upward revision from Rs 13.50 to Rs 25 per kilogram dealt a severe blow to impoverished household budgets already reeling from rising living expenses.
The DMK leader directed district office-bearers, elected representatives, and party cadres to mobilize public participation outside ration outlets across all districts. He affirmed that the DMK would vigorously challenge anti-poor administrative policies until the arbitrary price increase was completely withdrawn.
