DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged the Union government on October 30, 2017, to release the necessary funds to establish a permanent Tamil Chair at Harvard University. Following the Tamil Nadu state government's decision to sanction Rs 10 crore for the academic project, Stalin highlighted that central fiscal participation remained indispensable to meet the remaining endowment target. He noted that promoting classical Tamil scholarship at premier global universities represented a collective cultural obligation for the entire nation.

Stalin observed that global Tamil diaspora communities and philanthropists had already mobilized substantial contributions to institutionalize dedicated research into ancient Tamil literature, linguistics, and philosophy. A prestigious academic chair at Harvard would elevate Tamil heritage to international academic prominence alongside Sanskrit and Greek classical studies. Therefore, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development should step forward with generous matching grants without procedural delays.

The DMK leader stressed that recognizing classical languages required concrete institutional support beyond ceremonial statements. He urged New Delhi to honor the global prestige of Tamil by providing timely central funds. Stalin reiterated that promoting Tamil literature on world platforms strengthened India's rich multifaceted heritage.
