DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a sharp condemnation on October 30, 2017, after the Tamil Nadu police registered sedition charges against anti-methane project coordinator Professor T. Jayaraman. Stalin stated that slapping sedition sections on an academic and grassroots activist demonstrated the subservience of the ruling AIADMK dispensation to the central BJP government. He pointed out that Professor Jayaraman was merely amplifying the legitimate concerns of Thanjavur farmers and villagers opposing hazardous hydrocarbon extraction in Kathiramangalam.
Stalin emphasized that democratic dissent against detrimental environmental exploration cannot be equated with waging war against the state. The administration's coercive tactics revealed severe administrative intolerance toward peaceful civilian mobilizations. Instead of addressing genuine environmental anxieties regarding groundwater contamination and agricultural degradation in the Cauvery delta, the state machinery chose draconian intimidation.
The DMK leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of all fabricated charges against Professor Jayaraman and fellow protesters. He affirmed that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would stand shoulder to shoulder with delta farmers defending their ancestral soil and livelihood. Stalin warned that suppressing public grievances through police force would trigger widespread civic unrest across Tamil Nadu.
