The underprepared implementation of demonetisation led to failure in on all the originally stated goals: Eradicating fake currency, curbing black money and ending terrorist financing. Instead it slowed economic growth and demolished the hopes of all sections of the people!

Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin delivered a scathing assessment of demonetisation on November 8, 2017, marking the first anniversary of the controversial monetary policy. Stalin highlighted that the abruptly implemented measure had completely collapsed against its stated objectives of eradicating illicit black money, eliminating counterfeit currency, and choking terrorism financing networks. Instead of penalizing corrupt elites, the ill-conceived move dealt a devastating blow to India's informal economy and crushed millions of working-class livelihoods.

Stalin pointed out that demonetisation triggered unprecedented distress for daily wage earners, rural farmers, roadside vendors, and small manufacturing workshops across Tamil Nadu. Prolonged currency shortages paralyzed trade, forced industrial unit closures, and destroyed employment generation in labor-intensive sectors like textiles, leather, and match manufacturing. The macroeconomic growth rate tumbled, shattering the economic hopes of intermediate and lower income classes throughout the nation.

The DMK leader lamented the central government's stubborn refusal to acknowledge the catastrophic human and economic cost inflicted on ordinary citizens. He emphasized that arbitrary economic experiments executed without legislative debate or institutional planning violate democratic principles. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continue to mobilize public opinion against reckless economic mismanagement and defend the economic security of common citizens.
