DMK working president M.K. Stalin undertook an extensive field inspection of rain-ravaged Cauvery delta districts on November 8, 2017, assessing agricultural losses in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Stalin waded through waterlogged paddy fields where standing samba crops were submerged under seasonal floodwaters following relentless monsoon showers. He interacted directly with distressed agricultural laborers and small farmers, offering words of encouragement and distributing essential food and relief packages.
Stalin observed that agrarian communities were facing double jeopardy, having suffered acute drought earlier in the year only to witness subsequent floods ruin newly sown seedlings. He condemned the state government for failing to desilt drainage canals, rivers, and tail-end irrigation distributaries in time, which prevented excessive rainwater from draining smoothly into the sea. This criminal negligence resulted in massive crop submergence and colossal financial ruin for cultivating families.
The DMK leader demanded that the state administration immediately dispatch revenue and agricultural assessment teams to quantify crop damage fairly. He insisted on immediate per-acre compensation for submerged crops, waiver of cooperative agricultural loans, and adequate distribution of quality seeds for replanting. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly fight for agrarian rights and justice.
