Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the central government and Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on November 15, 2017, characterizing gubernatorial review meetings in Coimbatore as an unconstitutional encroachment on state autonomy. Stalin asserted that conducting direct reviews with district officials confirmed suspicions that the BJP-led union government was attempting to administer Tamil Nadu through proxy rule, taking unfair advantage of a subservient, puppet state government.

Stalin explained that the Indian Constitution explicitly vests executive power in the Council of Ministers accountable to the elected legislature, with the Governor bound to act upon their aid and advice. By directly summoning bureaucrats and issuing departmental instructions, the Governor was establishing an unlawful parallel administration. This dangerous precedent eroded the foundational federal compact that preserves the rights of states within the Indian Union.

The DMK leader warned that Tamil Nadu will never tolerate back-door governance that diminishes its self-respect and constitutional autonomy. He called upon all political parties, civil organizations, and democratic forces to resist centralizing tendencies that reduce state executives to mere administrative subordinates. Stalin reiterated that the DMK will vigorously fight any attempts to dilute federalism and state self-governance.
