On #NationalPressDay I salute the journalists and editorial teams in traditional and new media who courageously overcome intimidation, threats, & violence to perform crucial roles in upholding Democracy. I wish them a year of reduced hardship & interference, and greater freedom.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin extended warm felicitations to the media fraternity on November 16, 2017, on the occasion of National Press Day. Saluting reporters, photographers, and editorial teams working across print, television, and emerging digital platforms, Stalin commended their tireless courage in fearlessly confronting intimidation, political pressures, and physical hazards to deliver objective news. He described an independent press as the indispensable fourth pillar sustaining constitutional democracy.
Stalin voiced serious concern over mounting challenges facing journalists across the country, where dissent was increasingly criminalized and state agencies often exerted heavy-handed influence over independent reporting. He emphasized that genuine democratic governance requires robust, unfiltered public scrutiny of those in power. A weakened or muzzled press compromises civic transparency and deprives citizens of accurate information necessary for informed democratic participation.
The DMK leader wished the media fraternity a year marked by enhanced editorial independence, diminished administrative interference, and safe operating environments. Recalling the DMK's deep historical roots in journalism through party founders and publications, Stalin reaffirmed the Dravidian movement's unwavering commitment to press freedom. He pledged that the DMK will always stand in defense of journalists' democratic rights and professional dignity.
