DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded decisive governmental action on November 17, 2017, regarding the premature release of A.G. Perarivalan and six other long-incarcerated convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Stalin criticized the ruling AIADMK leadership for frequently boasting about maintaining cordial relations with the central BJP government while failing completely to translate that purported rapport into humanitarian relief or legal justice for Tamil prisoners who had spent over a quarter-century behind bars.
Stalin emphasized that the prolonged incarceration of the seven convicts, despite substantial legal arguments and broad consensus across Tamil Nadu society, warranted immediate executive clemency under constitutional provisions. He reminded the state government that mere rhetorical resolutions passed inside the assembly carry no value unless accompanied by rigorous follow-up and unyielding political pressure on union authorities. The state executive's visible timidity exposed its lack of genuine commitment to Tamil rights.
The DMK leader called upon Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to actively pursue the release petition with Union Home Ministry officials without further procrastination. Stalin reiterated that compassion, constitutional human rights, and legal finality must guide state policy. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the legitimate release of the convicts through all legal avenues.
