DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on November 17, 2017, that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will organize coordinated protest demonstrations outside fair price shops across Tamil Nadu on November 22. The statewide agitation was called to protest the sharp increase in sugar prices announced by the state government and the central withdrawal of essential food subsidies. Stalin characterized the price hike as an intolerable burden inflicted on vulnerable working-class households.
Stalin pointed out that the Public Distribution System remains the vital lifeline of poor and lower-middle-class families who rely on subsidized provisions for daily survival. Raising ration prices while dismantling central subsidies compromised household food security amidst inflation. He criticized the state administration for readily acceding to central directives rather than defending Tamil Nadu's universal PDS model, which was nurtured meticulously under previous DMK regimes.
The DMK leader urged the government to immediately revoke the unfair price increase and restore full subsidies. He called upon party cadres, trade unions, and citizens to participate actively in the November 22 agitations. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend the food rights and economic dignity of common people.
