DMK working president M.K. Stalin undertook an intensive ground inspection across disaster-struck Kanyakumari district on December 4, 2017, personally assessing catastrophic destruction unleashed by Cyclone Ockhi. From early morning hours, Stalin traveled extensively through coastal fishing hamlets, rural villages, and damaged agricultural belts, meeting directly with grief-stricken families whose breadwinners were stranded at sea. He offered sincere condolences and provided immediate relief supplies to displaced residents living in temporary community shelters.
Stalin listened intently to the harrowing accounts of fishermen, rubber growers, and banana cultivators whose livelihood foundations had been decimated by gale-force winds and torrential downpours. He observed widespread devastation, including downed power grids, blocked arterial roads, crushed boats, and uprooted trees. Local residents expressed acute frustration with the state government's near-total absence during the initial days of the tragedy, leaving communities to rely on self-organized rescue efforts.
The DMK leader reassured citizens that the party stood steadfastly in solidarity with southern coastal communities during their darkest hour. He pledged that the DMK would aggressively champion their rights inside the assembly and across public platforms, demanding comprehensive financial packages, immediate boat replacements, and debt relief. Stalin reiterated that real leadership requires showing up when people suffer.
