DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound concern and indignation on December 4, 2017, pointing out that more than four days had elapsed since Cyclone Ockhi wreaked historic devastation across Kanyakumari district, yet official damage assessment surveys had not commenced. Stalin criticized the total administrative paralysis displayed by the state government, which left stranded fishermen, devastated farmers, and marooned villagers to endure severe distress without organized relief or essential communications.
Stalin called upon both the central and state governments to immediately declare Kanyakumari a disaster-affected district to unlock emergency relief protocols and specialized financial aid. He emphasized that routine administrative measures were grossly insufficient to manage the widespread destruction of rubber, banana, and paddy cultivations alongside shattered maritime livelihoods. Immediate deployment of dedicated survey teams was imperative to accurately quantify losses and deliver rapid compensation.
The DMK leader demanded round-the-clock coordination between defense search units and local fishermen's associations who possessed deep knowledge of ocean currents and traditional fishing banks. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently pressure authorities until every affected citizen receives humane assistance, comprehensive rehabilitation, and adequate livelihood restoration.
