CM campaigning in #RKNagar, while Kanyakumari fishermen have to resort to protests demanding action to rescue the missing, is condemnable.People can interpret his priorities from his actions. I urge the CM to go to Kanyakumari & ensure rescue efforts are undertaken on a warfooting

Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a trenchant rebuke on December 7, 2017, condemning Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for campaigning in the R.K. Nagar by-election while Kanyakumari district reeled under the catastrophic aftermath of Cyclone Ockhi. Stalin expressed deep outrage that while thousands of grief-stricken fishing families took to the streets in desperate protests demanding rescue operations for missing kin, the head of the state government prioritized partisan electoral canvassing.

Stalin stated that the public could clearly discern the administration's skewed priorities from the Chief Minister's callous choices. Instead of camping in the disaster zone to personally coordinate multi-agency search efforts, assess crop losses, and comfort grieving coastal residents, the Chief Minister remained preoccupied with political point-scoring in Chennai. This detachment demonstrated a complete breakdown of administrative empathy and leadership ethics.

The DMK leader urged the Chief Minister to immediately suspend campaign activities, travel to Kanyakumari, and lead rescue operations on a war footing. He demanded that all naval, coast guard, and aerial resources be intensified to locate missing fishermen. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently hold the government accountable for its neglect of coastal lives.
