DMK working president M.K. Stalin delivered a trenchant critique of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on December 11, 2017, questioning his leadership ethos and democratic accountability. Stalin highlighted an alarming, consistent pattern wherein the Chief Minister systematically avoided meeting affected citizens during major statewide crises. Whether during the Neduvasal hydrocarbon agitations, Kathiramangalam protests, anti-NEET student rallies, or the devastating Cyclone Ockhi aftermath in Kanyakumari, the head of government chose evasion over empathy.
Stalin questioned whether it was becoming of an elected chief minister to govern in isolation while citizens faced severe distress. He pointed out that true leadership requires personal courage, direct dialogue, and visible presence on the ground when communities suffer. Instead of consoling grieving families or listening to aggrieved farmers, the Chief Minister remained ensconced in Chennai, leaving administrative decisions to bureaucratic inertia.
The DMK leader emphasized that democratic governance derives its legitimacy from responsiveness to public sentiment. He declared that an administration incapable of facing its own people has surrendered its moral authority to govern. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continue to stand directly beside struggling citizens, voicing their grievances and demanding accountable democratic leadership.
