DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a scathing statement on December 12, 2017, holding the ruling AIADMK government directly accountable for the tragic loss of fishermen during Cyclone Ockhi. Stalin revealed that during the previous DMK governance tenure under M. Karunanidhi, a comprehensive safety scheme was initiated to equip marine fishermen with high-frequency walkie-talkies and modern wireless communication systems. However, the subsequent AIADMK administration callously shelved the lifesaving program for seven consecutive years.

Stalin pointed out that had this critical maritime communication network been properly implemented and maintained, thousands of fishermen venturing into the deep sea could have received timely storm warnings. Instead, the total breakdown of communication channels left vulnerable boats stranded helplessly in ferocious mid-ocean swells, leading to immense loss of life and missing crew members. He characterized this systemic neglect as unpardonable administrative apathy.

The DMK leader emphasized that maritime worker security requires uninterrupted technological modernization rather than partisan neglect. He demanded immediate distribution of long-range satellite communication sets and GPS distress transponders to all artisanal and mechanized fishing craft.
