DMK working president M.K. Stalin met Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on December 13, 2017, to submit an urgent memorandum on Cyclone Ockhi. Stalin apprised the Governor of the distressing sluggishness plaguing relief and rescue operations in devastated Kanyakumari district. He urged the Governor to intervene with the central government to officially declare Kanyakumari a national disaster-affected region, unlocking emergency central funds, specialized disaster machinery, and comprehensive defense assets.
Stalin highlighted that hundreds of deep-sea fishermen remained untraced across maritime waters, leaving families stranded in agonizing uncertainty. He emphasized that the state government's response lacked administrative coordination, resulting in delayed relief supplies, widespread power blackouts, and unaddressed losses across rubber plantations and paddy fields. The scale of destruction, he argued, exceeded routine departmental capacities and demanded swift national intervention.
The DMK leader called for continuous naval and aerial reconnaissance missions expanding search perimeters into international waters where adrift vessels might be located. He insisted that the Governor leverage constitutional authority to ensure prompt executive accountability. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the welfare and rehabilitation of distressed coastal communities.
