@CMOTamilNadu Since PM @narendramodi is visiting Kanyakumari today, I appeal to the PM to sanction Rs.2000 crore from the central fund to mitigate the suffering of the people. The CM must insist for immediate central assistance.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 19, 2017, on the occasion of the Prime Minister's official visit to assess disaster-stricken Kanyakumari district. Stalin demanded the immediate sanction of two thousand crore rupees from central disaster funds to alleviate unprecedented human suffering caused by Cyclone Ockhi. He underscored that the coastal catastrophe devastated local agriculture, crushed small plantations, destroyed fishing boats, and left countless families in severe economic ruin.
Stalin pressed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to firmly demand substantial central compensation during his high-level review meetings with the Prime Minister. He pointed out that token financial assistance or bureaucratic delays would only compound the miseries of rural laborers, rubber growers, and coastal communities struggling to rebuild their lives. Adequate budgetary allocations, debt waivers for affected farmers, and modern sea rescue logistics were essential prerequisites for comprehensive district recovery.
The DMK leader urged the union government to treat the calamity with humanitarian urgency rather than standard bureaucratic protocol. He stressed that coastal Tamil Nadu deserved prompt institutional compassion and robust disaster mitigation infrastructure. Stalin reiterated that the DMK will persistently champion the welfare of cyclone victims until complete rehabilitation is achieved.
