Criminality and imprisonment in The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill is against the spirit of Supreme court Judgment on Triple Talaq. I demand the bjp led Central Government to refer this Bill to the Select Committee for wider consultation. #TripleTalaqBill https://t.co/vdp06LrjWq

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a statement on December 29, 2017, demanding that the BJP-led Union government refer the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill to a Parliamentary Select Committee for extensive legislative scrutiny and wide stakeholder consultation. Stalin asserted that introducing harsh penal provisions, criminal liability, and imprisonment for instantaneous triple talaq contradicts the core spirit and intent of the Supreme Court of India's landmark verdict, which had already declared the unilateral practice null and void under civil jurisprudence.
Stalin pointed out that criminalizing a marital civil dispute creates legal absurdities and inflicts greater socio-economic vulnerability on women and dependent children rather than providing meaningful empowerment. He cautioned that rushing contentious legislation through Parliament without consulting community representatives, legal jurists, and women rights organizations reveals an ideological agenda rather than genuine concern for gender justice. Constructive legal reform, he argued, must prioritize civil remedies, maintenance, and child custody.
The DMK leader demanded that parliamentary conventions be respected by permitting detailed examination by a Select Committee. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion minority rights and constitutional justice. He reiterated the party's firm commitment to equitable constitutional safeguards.
