Centre should step in to save the firecracker manufacturing cluster in Sivakasi, which accounts for 90% of Indian firecracker production and protect the Industry employing lakhs of workers. DMK MPs in Rajya Sabha will raise the issue with concerned Minister. #CrackerBan
DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon the central government on January 2, 2018, to intervene urgently to safeguard the fireworks manufacturing cluster in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. Stalin highlighted that Sivakasi accounts for over ninety percent of India's total domestic firecracker production and sustains the livelihoods of several lakhs of industrial and rural workers. He voiced deep concern that blanket regulatory bans and ambiguous environmental compliance directives had brought manufacturing activity to a complete standstill, pushing thousands of families into severe distress.
Stalin emphasized that while scientific environmental regulations are important, policies must be balanced with economic survival and transitional support for industrial clusters. The prolonged shutdown of fireworks units threatened not only factory owners but also daily-wage workers, printers, box manufacturers, and chemical suppliers across southern districts. He announced that DMK Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha would raise the crisis directly with the relevant Union Minister.
The DMK leader demanded practical regulatory guidelines, research into eco-friendly formulations, and legal protections to sustain this traditional indigenous industry. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the economic welfare of Sivakasi workers. He insisted on urgent policy intervention from New Delhi.
