DMK working president M.K. Stalin registered vehement opposition on January 2, 2018, against two contentious central legislative measures: the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill and the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill 2017. Stalin condemned the BJP-led central government for aggressively pursuing an agenda of extreme administrative centralization, which he characterized as the revival of an authoritarian license raj that systematically usurps legislative powers guaranteed to states under India's federal constitutional structure.
Regarding the NMC Bill, Stalin warned that disbanding the Medical Council of India in favor of a centrally nominated commission would undermine state medical autonomy, deregulate private medical college fee structures, and compromise medical education standards. Similarly, he criticized the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill for encroaching on state transport competencies, centralizing licensing rules, and imposing crushing penalties on ordinary motorists without state consultation.
The DMK leader asserted that both legislative bills were drafted in disregard of cooperative federalism and public interest. He called upon all opposition parties to resist the bills in Parliament. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend the constitutional rights of states against overreaching central control. He demanded federal legislative balance.
