DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strong rebuttal on January 7, 2018, criticizing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for issuing misleading official statements regarding their telephone conversation on the ongoing transport strike. Stalin clarified that during their call, he had directly urged the Chief Minister to intervene personally and invite striking trade union leaders for tripartite negotiations, rather than leaving the critical public crisis entirely to junior ministers who lacked decision-making authority.
Stalin stated that the Chief Minister released a distorted press statement claiming Stalin spoke one-sidedly, solely to cover up the administration's obstinate refusal to sit across the table with employee representatives. He pointed out that millions of commuters were stranded across the state while transport workers were simply asking for their earned retirement dues and fair wage adjustments. Evading direct leadership during an acute public emergency demonstrated executive weakness.
The DMK leader called upon the Chief Minister to abandon petty political evasions and resolve the strike through empathetic, direct dialogue. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently stand with transport workers until their legitimate rights and public transit services are restored. He urged immediate executive action to end commuter hardship.
