DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on January 11, 2018, to immediately set up a dedicated protection and grievance cell within the Directorate of Medical Education. Stalin expressed deep alarm over escalating threats, discrimination, and harassment faced by Tamil Nadu students pursuing professional education in other states, citing the unresolved mysterious death of medical student Saravanan in Delhi and the tragic suicide attempt of Mariyaraj in Ahmedabad following ethnic harassment.
Stalin emphasized that bright students who secure admissions in premier national medical institutions through intense merit and dedication deserve a safe, secure, and nurturing academic environment. However, linguistic prejudice, institutional apathy, and regional hostility in northern institutions have created severe mental agony and physical peril for outstation Tamil students. He criticized the state government for exhibiting criminal indifference toward the safety of its scholars outside Tamil Nadu.
The DMK leader stressed that an active monitoring unit with round-the-clock legal, psychiatric, and administrative assistance must be instituted to coordinate with other state governments and central authorities. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently fight to guarantee the security, equality, and dignity of Tamil students nationwide. He insisted on swift administrative intervention.
