Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin led a resolute opposition inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on January 12, 2018, strongly condemning the AIADMK government for passing legislation that doubled the salaries and allowances of Members of the Legislative Assembly by 100 percent. Stalin exposed the severe moral contradiction of the ruling party, which cited acute fiscal constraints to deny a marginal 0.13 percent wage increment to striking state transport workers, yet hastily enacted an exorbitant salary doubling for elected legislators.

Stalin announced that all DMK legislators submitted formal written letters to the Speaker and the assembly secretariat categorically refusing to accept the increased pay. He emphasized that accepting an opulent salary hike while tens of thousands of transport workers, daily laborers, and common citizens were suffering economic distress was an unconscionable betrayal of public trust. Responsible elected representatives, he argued, must prioritize workers' welfare over personal financial gains.

The DMK leader demanded that the state government redirect public funds towards settling pending retirement gratuities and legitimate wage demands of transport employees. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently stand in solidarity with struggling workers against executive greed and hypocrisy. He reiterated the party's commitment to working-class justice.
