DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a clarifying statement on January 13, 2018, strongly condemning the violent intimidation and hate campaigns directed against renowned Tamil poet Vairamuthu and the Dinamani daily newspaper. Stalin stated categorically that the DMK does not endorse or participate in disparaging the personal spiritual faith and cherished beliefs of devotees belonging to Hinduism or any other religion. He underscored that mutual respect for diverse religious sentiments remains fundamental to social harmony.
Stalin highlighted that poet Vairamuthu had already publicly expressed sincere regret for any unintended hurt caused by his literary address regarding Andal. In spite of that clear clarification, sectarian fringe outfits continued to issue vile threats of physical harm, target the poet's residence, and threaten media organizations. Stalin asserted that inciting communal frenzy and intimidating writers through mob pressure is wholly unacceptable in a civilized, democratic society governed by law.
The DMK leader demanded that the state police ensure strict protection for the writer, media establishments, and citizen safety while prosecuting instigators of violence. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will always stand for peaceful communal coexistence and artistic expression. He urged all groups to maintain peace and restraint.
