DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration on January 20, 2018, for imposing an unbearable bus fare hike on poor, marginalized, and middle-class citizens across Tamil Nadu. Stalin characterized the move as an insensitive attack on everyday commuters who rely on state-run buses for livelihood, schooling, and healthcare. He cautioned the government that historical lessons show regimes that ruthlessly gamble with citizen wellbeing inevitably face popular rejection and political downfall.
Stalin pointed out that working families were already struggling under steep price rises in essential goods and stagnant wages. Doubling bus fares overnight represented an intolerable shock that pushed vulnerable households into deeper financial hardship. He criticized ministers for attempting to offset corporate losses caused by administrative corruption and negligence by extorting money from daily-wage earners.
The DMK leader demanded an immediate and complete withdrawal of the fare revision to alleviate widespread public suffering. He warned that public outrage would manifest in relentless democratic agitations across the state if the government remained recalcitrant. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will spearhead popular protests until affordable public transit is fully restored. He urged the administration to act without delay.
