DMK working president M.K. Stalin sent a formal letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on January 23, 2018, strongly condemning the state government for imposing sharp bus fare hikes without undertaking constructive administrative reforms. Stalin stressed that public transport corporations had been pushed into severe financial distress due to governmental corruption, mismanagement, and wasteful expenditures, which the administration was now attempting to recover by taxing ordinary commuters.
In his letter, Stalin urged the Chief Minister to immediately revoke the revised fare structure in the interest of poor and middle-class citizens, students, and daily-wage laborers. He pointed out that raising ticket prices drastically would discourage public transport usage, causing severe household hardship across rural and urban Tamil Nadu. Instead of penalizing riders, the government should streamline corporate administration, eliminate corrupt leakages, and optimize route management.
The DMK leader warned that persisting with the unpopular decision would trigger statewide democratic protests. He insisted that the executive prioritize public welfare over bureaucratic expedience. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently hold the government accountable until the fare hike is completely rescinded. He urged the Chief Minister to act swiftly.
