DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement on January 24, 2018, condemning the unprecedented surge in petrol and diesel prices that severely affected motorists, transport operators, and common consumers across the country. Stalin demanded that the BJP-led central government immediately scrap its controversial policy of daily dynamic fuel price revisions, arguing that continuous increases inflated freight tariffs and triggered price rises in essential commodities.
Stalin simultaneously called upon the Tamil Nadu state government to drastically slash value-added sales tax on petroleum products to provide direct fiscal relief to citizens. He pointed out that while crude oil prices in international markets remained moderate compared to historical peaks, excessive excise duties imposed by the Centre and high local levies by the state overburdened ordinary households. Agriculture, logistics, and small industries were suffering severe cost inflation.
The DMK leader emphasized that governments must not exploit basic fuel needs as tools for revenue extraction during economic distress. He urged both central and state administrations to demonstrate fiscal sensitivity by reducing duties immediately. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently protest against fuel taxation policies that hurt working families.
