DMK working president M.K. Stalin led a massive protest demonstration at Chepauk in Chennai on January 27, 2018, condemning the ruling AIADMK government for drastically hiking public bus fares across Tamil Nadu. Addressing thousands of agitated citizens, party workers, and representatives from diverse trade bodies, Stalin denounced the state administration as an illegitimate regime that stays in power through horse-trading while inflicting deep economic distress upon ordinary working families.
Stalin emphasized that public transit is an essential public service created to ensure mobility for laborers, factory employees, daily wagers, and students. He pointed out that doubling ticket prices overnight crushed household budgets without improving commuter safety, fleet quality, or bus availability. He criticized ministers for attempting to recover revenue losses resulting from systemic corruption by extorting money from vulnerable commuters.
The DMK leader demanded an immediate and complete rollback of the revised fares, warning that cosmetic price cuts would never satisfy public grievances. He declared that protests would intensify across every taluk and municipality if the administration failed to listen to citizen distress. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the welfare of commuters. He thanked citizens for showing unwavering solidarity.
