DMK working president M.K. Stalin chaired an urgent consultative meeting of opposition party leaders in Chennai on January 28, 2018, where a unanimous resolution was passed calling for a massive statewide road blockade demonstration on January 29. The joint action was organized to compel the AIADMK administration to revoke its steep bus fare hikes in their entirety. Stalin appealed to all political workers, trade unionists, student organizations, and common citizens to participate en masse in the peaceful protest.

Stalin highlighted that the exorbitant ticket pricing had paralyzed household finances across Tamil Nadu, affecting rural agricultural workers, factory laborers, and daily-wage earners most severely. He criticized the state government for displaying obstinate apathy in the face of widespread public indignation. Stalin emphasized that when elected authorities abandon public welfare, disciplined civic protest becomes a democratic necessity to demand institutional accountability.

The DMK leader stated that the coordinated strike across all districts would convey the depth of public frustration directly to the state administration.
