DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed heartfelt gratitude on January 29, 2018, to DMK cadres, allied political organizations, and the general public across Tamil Nadu for transforming the statewide Jail Bharo court-arrest agitation into a historic mass movement. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators courted arrest in every district, shutting down commercial hubs and filling detention centers to register their vehement protest against the AIADMK administration's steep bus fare hikes.
Stalin emphasized that the overwhelming public participation demonstrated universal outrage against the government's callous decision to pass administrative deficits onto ordinary commuters. From rural wage earners and small traders to students and industrial laborers, citizens across demographics joined hands with opposition parties. Stalin pointed out that such massive, nonviolent mobilization proved that the ruling regime had completely lost popular legitimacy and public trust.
The DMK leader vowed that the struggle would continue unabated until the state government implemented a total rollback of the bus fare increase. He warned the executive that mere cosmetic adjustments would not appease public anger. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will spearhead sustained democratic agitation to protect the economic wellbeing of common families.
