Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a severe condemnation on January 30, 2018, against the brutal police lathi-charge unleashed on college students peacefully demonstrating in Vellore against steep bus fare hikes. Stalin decried the state government's heavy-handed response, asserting that using baton charges and police violence against youth exercising their constitutional right to protest is an indefensible act of state repression. He demanded that the administration halt its high-handed measures and immediately drop all criminal charges filed against student demonstrators.

Stalin pointed out that students from humble, rural backgrounds depend entirely on public bus transport to travel to colleges, polytechnics, and schools daily. The sharp rise in ticket prices and pass fees placed an intolerable burden on working families, prompting spontaneous and justified student unrest across educational institutions. Rather than engaging students empathetically or offering economic relief, the AIADMK regime resorted to authoritarian police force.

The DMK leader insisted that the government unconditionally revoke the bus fare hikes and release all detained youths immediately. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will stand firmly with Tamil Nadu's students, providing legal assistance and political backing until their legitimate demands are met. He cautioned the government against testing public patience.
