Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin welcomed on January 31, 2018, the proposed initiative of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to meet his Karnataka counterpart Siddaramaiah to resolve the contentious Cauvery river water-sharing dispute. Stalin noted that direct dialogue is essential to secure urgent water releases for standing crops in the Cauvery delta region. However, he emphasized that piecemeal or unilateral executive interactions alone cannot protect the state's long-term riparian entitlements.

Stalin urged the Chief Minister to immediately assemble an all-party delegation comprising leaders of all recognized political parties in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that presenting a united front by meeting both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Karnataka leadership in person would demonstrate the resolute consensus of Tamil society on this critical agrarian issue. A unified statewide representation, he argued, carries immense constitutional weight and collective authority.

The DMK leader reiterated that saving delta agriculture and securing farmers' livelihoods must transcend partisan political differences. He called upon the state government to act proactively without delay. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK stands ready to cooperate fully with any concerted, multi-party effort to safeguard Tamil Nadu's legitimate water rights. He pledged constructive opposition solidarity.
