Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a sharp assessment of Union Budget 2018 on February 1, 2018, describing the central government's fiscal plan as nothing more than a bundle of decorative announcements. Stalin criticized the BJP-led Union administration for offering no substantive policy roadmap to generate sustainable employment for educated youth, tackle widening fiscal deficits, or revive national economic growth. He strongly condemned the central budget for completely bypassing the pressing developmental priorities and financial entitlements of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu's critical railway corridors, disaster relief requirements, port infrastructure, and industrial schemes were largely ignored by central policymakers. Rather than addressing severe agrarian distress and small business challenges created by demonetization and GST implementation, the budget relied on rhetorical packaging. He pointed out that progressive contributing states continued to be systematically deprived of fair financial allocations and capital investments.

The DMK leader asserted that an effective national budget must deliver tangible relief to grassroots workers, farmers, and the unemployed. He urged the Centre to rebalance fiscal priorities and end discrimination against southern states. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently demand equitable federal resource sharing and fiscal justice for Tamil Nadu.
