DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on February 6, 2018, that the Dravidian Progress Federation will donate one crore rupees towards establishing a permanent Tamil Chair at Harvard University. Stalin highlighted that the DMK, having successfully secured official Classical Language status for Tamil during its governance tenure under party president M. Karunanidhi, feels a profound historic obligation to support high-level global research into the language's antiquity, literary wealth, and civilizational contributions.

Stalin commended the worldwide Tamil diaspora and scholars whose collective efforts sparked the initiative to institute the academic chair at Harvard. He explained that establishing a permanent chair at one of the world's most prestigious academic institutions ensures that Sangam literature, Dravidian linguistics, and ancient Tamil inscriptions receive rigorous scholarly attention. He underscored that Tamil deserves equal intellectual standing alongside Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit in international academic faculties.

The DMK leader reiterated that preserving and elevating Tamil language rights remains the foundational cornerstone of the Dravidian movement.
