DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement on February 7, 2018, condemning the AIADMK administration for raising monthly bus pass rates by 80 to 90 rupees. Stalin characterized the move as an unrelenting assault on ordinary citizens, comparing it to lightning striking twice after the government had already implemented steep ticket price hikes across all routes. He demanded an immediate withdrawal of this anti-people measure.
Stalin pointed out that monthly bus passes are essential lifelines for working-class commuters, factory laborers, self-employed workers, and students who budget every rupee to manage monthly expenses. Imposing successive price increases during a period of widespread economic stress directly harms household welfare. He criticized the state government for attempting to cover administrative losses by squeezing vulnerable travelers rather than fixing structural corruption and operational waste.
The DMK leader emphasized that access to affordable transit is a fundamental citizen right that governments must safeguard. He warned that public anger would escalate if the administration persisted in ignoring commuter distress. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently agitate across the state until all bus fare increases and pass surcharges are revoked.
