DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a sharp condemnation on February 11, 2018, criticizing the ruling party's move to unveil the portrait of a convicted leader inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Stalin highlighted the stark hypocrisy of the treasury benches, which had previously slapped breach-of-privilege notices against DMK legislators for displaying samples of banned gutkha inside the chamber to expose illicit narcotics distribution and high-level police collusion.
Stalin asserted that installing the portrait of a person convicted in a disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court violates constitutional morality and stains the sanctity of the legislature. He emphasized that the legislative assembly is the temple of democracy, meant to represent the sovereignty, dignity, and aspirations of the people, rather than memorializing corruption convicts.
The DMK leader called upon the Speaker and the state government to drop the controversial plan and respect established judicial determinations. He stated that the assembly should set the highest standards of probity and legality for the entire state. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will resist the glorification of corruption in democratic institutions through constitutional and legal avenues. He pledged firm democratic resistance.
