DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on February 16, 2018, that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami immediately convene an all-party meeting alongside farmers association representatives following the Supreme Court verdict on the Cauvery water dispute. Stalin voiced deep anguish over the judicial reduction of Tamil Nadu's water share, asserting that the state had been betrayed and that the ruling AIADMK government failed to defend riparian entitlements secured earlier by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Stalin pointed out that the Cauvery basin remains the lifeline of Tamil Nadu agriculture, sustaining millions of delta farmers who depend entirely on timely water releases for their seasonal crops. He stated that the state government showed alarming complacency during legal proceedings, resulting in the forfeiture of critical water rights before the apex court.

The DMK leader stressed that the state cannot remain passive while agrarian livelihoods face severe jeopardy. He urged the administration to build broad consensus by consulting all political parties and agricultural leaders to formulate unified legal and administrative countermeasures. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently mobilize democratic pressure to safeguard the state's legitimate water rights and protect delta farmers.
