DMK working president M.K. Stalin welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public acknowledgment on February 17, 2018, affirming that Tamil is older than Sanskrit. Stalin remarked that while the Prime Minister's recognition of historical and linguistic truth was commendable, genuine sincerity demanded translating that verbal appreciation into constitutional action. He urged the Prime Minister, if his conscience truly believed in Tamil's classical pre-eminence, to officially declare Tamil as a co-official language of the Union government and authorize its use as a court language in the Madras High Court.
Stalin pointed out that declaring classical Tamil as an administrative language of the central administration would fulfill a long-cherished democratic aspiration of crores of Tamils worldwide. In addition, enabling Tamil litigants to seek justice in their mother tongue before the state's highest judicial forum is an essential requirement of judicial accessibility and linguistic self-respect.
The DMK leader stressed that linguistic equality is the cornerstone of true federalism. He urged the Union government to discard majoritarian linguistic biases and grant equal status to all constitutional languages. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the constitutional enshrinement of Tamil across national institutions.
