DMK working president M.K. Stalin addressed an impassioned appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2018, urging the Union government to match its verbal praise for Tamil with equitable central budgetary allocations on par with funds lavished on Sanskrit. Stalin asserted that Tamil, as an ancient classical language with millennia of living literary heritage, deserves substantial promotional funding for linguistic research, translation initiatives, and global academic chairs, rather than being treated with financial disparity by central cultural ministries.
Stalin further demanded that the Union government officially declare the world-renowned ethical treatise, the Thirukkural authored by immortal sage Thiruvalluvar, as the "National Book of India." He highlighted that the universal humanism, egalitarian ethics, and secular moral philosophy of the Thirukkural transcend religious and caste boundaries, offering eternal guidance for human civilization and constitutional values across the globe.
The DMK leader emphasized that true cultural respect requires institutional recognition and financial equality, not empty public tributes during electoral campaigns. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continually fight for the rightful dignity of the Tamil language, promoting its timeless literature and humanistic philosophy worldwide.
