DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound outrage on February 26, 2018, over the deliberate exclusion of the state anthem, Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu, and the singing of a religious hymn in obsolete Sanskrit during an official government function at IIT Madras attended by Union Ministers. Stalin denounced the incident as a brazen assault on Tamil linguistic pride, secular institutional protocol, and the pluralistic character of India's premier public educational institutions.
Stalin emphasized that national educational campuses funded by public revenues must scrupulously respect federal diversity, secular principles, and regional cultural sensitivities rather than promoting narrow sectarian agendas. Disregarding the regional state anthem while imposing Sanskrit prayers in Tamil Nadu, he asserted, reflected an aggressive attempt by central authorities to undermine linguistic identity and cultural equality.
The DMK leader demanded that the central government and the administration of IIT Madras issue an unconditional apology and institute stringent guidelines preventing such deliberate exclusions in future official convocations. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will fiercely oppose every effort to impose Sanskrit or Hindi, standing as an unyielding fortress protecting Tamil language, secular values, and cultural heritage.
