DMK working president M.K. Stalin challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 4, 2018, questioning whether the Union government would demonstrate genuine political will by introducing and passing the long-delayed Women's Reservation Bill during the upcoming parliamentary budget session. Stalin pointed out that while the Prime Minister frequently delivered eloquent speeches on women's empowerment and gender dignity during international diplomatic tours, his government had persistently failed to legislate the historic 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
Stalin emphasized that the DMK, guided by its foundational social justice philosophy, has steadfastly championed equitable legislative representation for women across decades. He recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. M. Karunanidhi had pioneered pathbreaking reservations for women in local self-governments, government employment, and educational institutions throughout Tamil Nadu, establishing practical precedents for gender equality.
The DMK leader urged the central government to prioritize the legislative empowerment of women above empty political rhetoric. He demanded immediate action during the ongoing parliamentary calendar. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently fight until constitutional representation is guaranteed for women across every tier of Indian democracy.
