DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound shock and grief on March 8, 2018, over the tragic death of Usha, a pregnant woman who died at Thiruverumbur near Tiruchirappalli after a police traffic inspector kicked the two-wheeler she was riding because the driver was not wearing a helmet. Stalin termed the inspector's violent action an act of shocking inhumanity that degraded professional law enforcement. He condemned the subsequent heavy-handed police lathi charge against peaceful local residents who assembled to protest the horrific tragedy.
Stalin emphasized that routine vehicle enforcement checks must never descend into fatal physical assaults on citizens traveling on public roads. He noted that the excessive use of force revealed a severe breakdown in police discipline, training, and institutional accountability under the incumbent administration. Stalin demanded the immediate registration of murder charges against the offending officer and exemplary financial compensation for Usha's grieving family.
The DMK leader urged the home department to conduct fundamental police sensitization training. He affirmed that the DMK will stand firmly with the victim's family, demanding justice and rigorous accountability across law enforcement agencies.
