DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound grief and shock on March 12, 2018, following the devastating forest fire that engulfed a trekking expedition in the Kurangani hills of Theni district, tragically claiming nine lives among a thirty-six-member team. Stalin conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, sharing their deep anguish while calling on the state government to deploy all available emergency resources to locate, treat, and airlift surviving trekkers trapped on the rugged mountain slopes.
Stalin urged the state administration to coordinate closely with Indian Air Force rescue helicopters and specialized disaster management teams to expedite evacuation efforts. He emphasized that every passing minute was critical to saving lives, insisting that specialized burn treatment units and advanced medical infrastructure be mobilized across nearby government hospitals to provide comprehensive critical care to the severely injured victims.
The DMK leader also called for a thorough, transparent investigation into how permissions were granted for trekking in fire-prone forest zones during peak dry season. Stalin affirmed that institutional safety protocols must be overhauled to prevent future wilderness tragedies across Tamil Nadu.
